Nuts & Bolts Update
The Chargers picked up their 6th win of the season with a convincing win over the NY Jets in MetLife Stadium last Sunday. The scoring opened for San Diego when Micheal Spurlock fielded a punt on his own 37 yard line and scampered 63 yards for the early score. *The last time the Jets gave up a punt return for a TD was in 2003. The Jets quickly scored to tie the game at 7-7 as 2nd year QB Greg McElroy directed the team in a methodical if not spectacular drive down the field. Shonn Greene scored for the Jets on a 1 yard run. After the Chargers punted, the Jets then took the lead 14-7 on their next possession. On the drive, San Diego had several defensive misplays. First, several defenders got turned around and the Jets completed a long pass for a big gain. Soon after, the Chargers’ Quentin Jammer was called for pass interference in the end zone with less one minute remaining in the 1st quarter. New York’s Shonn Green scored his 2nd rushing td of the game with another 1 yard run.
The Chargers put more points on the board before time ran out in the 2nd quarter. Kicker Nick Novak converted a 46 yard field goal, but a 12 men on the field penalty set him back 5 yards for a 2nd attempt. Novak sailed it through on the right inside of the goal post for a successful 51 yarder and the Chargers were down 14-10 going into halftime.
The 2nd half scoring started quickly when San Diego took the opening kick off and marched down the field, culminating in a 38 yard TD pass to Danario Alexander.
From that point on, it was all SD as they ran off 17 unanswered points. Tight End Antonio Gates caught a 34-yard td pass for his 10th TD of the season. In total, the drive was 8 plays for 81 yards. The touchdown was Gates’ 82nd as a Charger, breaking the record held by Lance “Bambi” Alworth. The Jets kicked a (meaningless) field goal before San Diego ran time off the clock for most of the 4th quarter.
Quarterback Philip Rivers ended the game 11 for 22 for 136 yards with 2 TDs and no interceptions. Running back Jackie Battle filled in for starter Ryan Matthews and finished with 19 carries for 49 yards.
Stat of the game – 11 sacks for the Chargers.
Both the Jets and Chargers stand at 6-9 and are out of the play-off picture. The situation in SD is likely to change immediately after today’s final game at home vs Oakland. Both Coach Norv Turner and GM A.J. Smith expected to be fired.
The Chargers are currently 4-4 on the road this season, but a woeful 2-5 at Qualcomm. Today’s game is a sellout and starts at 1:25P West Coast time.
