Distinctive Style is Part of the Game
Exactly two years ago, I participated in a charity best ball tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina, and at the end of a most enjoyable eighteen holes on the beautiful Ballantyne Resort Golf Course, I was awarded one of the tournament trophies.
I was so thrilled; you can’t even begin to imagine my excitement!! In fact, I am still very proud of this accomplishment. The award however, wasn’t for a hole in one, or longest drive, or even closest to the pin; it was for “Best Dressed”. I share this story because it demonstrates that, as much as I love the sport of golf, putting together an ensemble that is stylish and unique, is where my true passion lies.
I began playing golf about 13 years ago, and found that the style offerings for women were extremely limited. As a result, I had to get pretty creative to achieve looks that would complement my shape and look nice on me. During that time, I often found myself picking up pieces that were not official golf gear, but nonetheless worked as adequate substitutes because the shirts had the required collars, and the hemlines were not too far above my knee.
Since then, much has changed in the way of women’s golf apparel. Thanks to fashion conscious female golf professionals like Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis, coupled with less stringent enforcement of dress codes at most golf courses, clothing styles on the green have begun to mirror fashion trends on the runway. Designers of women’s golf apparel have finally begun to take note, and are realizing that women want to look good on the green.
Despite this, you still may find it a bit challenging to find the latest styles in women’s golf apparel if you take a trip to your local sporting goods store or pro shop. Those retailers, still offer few and limited styles for female golfers. The good news is there are several on-line retailers of women’s golf clothing that offer a variety of options to meet all of your golf fashion needs and desires.
Once you’ve found a golf boutique with styles that match your tastes, here are some basic tips to ensure that you always arrive at the golf course looking classy & stylish:
1) Ditch the boring white polo and khaki’s, and embrace colors and patterns.
2) Choose moisture wicking fabrics that are flexible and comfortable. Doing so will help you to look as fresh and cool on the 18th hole, as you did on the first.
3) Know your body type and choose cuts that will compliment your shape. Yes, hemlines have gotten shorter, but if you feel that your legs aren’t your best attribute, choose slacks or capris.
4) Complete your look with a matching visor and a pair of fabulous sunglasses.
June is Women’s Golf Month, so whether you’re a veteran or new to the game, this is the perfect time to grab a girlfriend, don a fab golf ensemble, and hit the green. Make sure to use the previously referenced style tips and you’ll be sure to score a look that’s fashionably up to par!!
